Fantasy Football Projections: Detroit Lions

Inconsistency, I have named thee and thy name is Matt Stafford. Stafford is a gun-slinging, big-armed passer who can never seem to string together multiple successful seasons in a row. After breaking out in 2011 with 40 TD and 5000 yards, Stafford has rotated between Top 10 fantasy seasons and fantasy snoozers on an every-other-year basis. 2017 was a solid fantasy campaign where he contributed 29 TD and 4400 yards while keeping his interception levels low (by his standards) at only 10. This is the year I think Stafford will break the trend and repeat as a challenger for Top 10 fantasy value at the QB position. Stafford will be affordable as a later round pick and is yet another reason why you should never over-reach for a QB early – there’s always quality production late. I have him repeating his 2017 campaign making him a solid starter in all formats.

Stafford will get back his favorite targets in Golden Tate and Marvin Jones, Jr. as well as backfield threat Theo Riddick and emerging big-play threat Kenny Golladay. Jones and Golladay are big-play threats who will stretch the field and allow for Tate and Riddick to work underneath just as they did in 2017. Jones and Tate should get back to 1000 yards each and be solid WR2/3 options in all formats. Golladay will be a late-round sleeper who could wind up being a big play-maker on this team that helps this offense become a fantasy juggernaut.

Riddick will be an RB3 this year in PPR formats and may be the only RB on the roster who carries consistent fantasy value in any format. Ameer Abdullah has failed to take control of the Lions backfield the past three seasons either due to poor play or injuries and his chances may have run out. The Lions brought in plodding grinder LeGarrette Blount to help wear down opposing defenses but both may fall behind rookie draft pick Kerryon Johnson. Johnson was a successful workhorse back for Auburn who can contribute in all three phases of the game. While he’s unlikely to force Riddick out of a job for primary receiving duties, he could provide the explosive threat needed to uproot Blount and Abdullah. Draft Riddick in PPR leagues, stash Johnson as a late-round sleeper.

While he was often hurt, Eric Ebron was a pass-catching weapon at tight end and he leaves a lot of production on the table with his exit from Detroit. Unfortunately, that production is likely to flow to Golladay and the receivers while Devin Toilolo and Luke Wilson fight for playing time at tight end. Both men will have their days where they post some numbers, but neither will be consistent or a reliable fantasy option. Pass here.
