Fantasy Football Projection: Los Angeles Rams

2016 gave us an up-close look at the #1 overall pick of the draft and it wasn’t pretty. HBO’s Hard Knocks showed what appeared to be an overwhelmed young quarterback and Goff’s play on the field didn’t dispel that image as he struggled mightily to a 54.6 completion percentage. Something clicked for the rising star in 2017 as he went from a deer in headlights rookie to a poised, ball controlling, touchdown throwing game manager. Goff’s 28/7 TD/INT ratio was just as stellar as his completing 62% of his passes. The Rams have done an excellent job of surrounding Goff with talented players so 2018 should be another strong year making him a viable fantasy starter that you can likely land at the back end of drafts.

Todd Gurley is a big contributor to Goff’s newfound success. They don’t make backs more complete and effective as Gurley with his ability to grind down opposing defenses and break plays in the passing game. Gurley’s 2000 yards from scrimmage and 19 total TD’s won fantasy leagues for owners everywhere and they carried the Rams offense to new heights. The feature back stands poised to build on his breakout campaign given the lack of any legitimate backup runner on the team and he is as good a bet as any at #1 overall in your fantasy drafts.

The receiving corps is really a three-man show headlined by the recently acquired Brandin Cooks with second-year possession man Cooper Kupp and emerging veteran asset Robert Woods in support. Cooks has posted 1000+ receiving yards and 7+ TD’s in each of his last three seasons playing with the likes of Drew Brees and Tom Brady. While Goff is neither Brady nor Brees, he is fully capable of feeding Cooks all he can eat. Kupp’s 62 catches, 869 yards, and 5 TD’s as a rookie were a solid next step after he shredded college defenses for four years. Kupp is a pure possession man who can create space and has dependable hands and he is a good bet to team up with Cooks to form a similar duo to Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen over in Minnesota. Woods took a big step forward in his first season with L.A. and is a fantastic #3 option for Goff rounding out an effective group of pass catchers. Cooks and Kupp are WR2 options and Woods is a wait and see WR4/FLEX possibility.

The Rams will look to second-year tight end Gerald Everett to earn a bigger role on offense. Tyler Higbee provides a stronger profile as a blocker and can contribute as a pass catcher but Everett is the play-maker here and could be poised for a breakout campaign. If Everett can improve his blocking a bit and wrestle away the starting job from Higbee, he’ll be on of my top late round targets for tight end. Track him as a potential Top 10 option here.
