My how things change.
After the Broncos drafted Paxton Lynch in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft there was conversation from the front office in regards to Paxton Lynch possibly starting, though in truth most thought it would be best for him to hold the clipboard a year or two.
Flash forward to today and GM John Elway is now quoted as saying “Paxton is going to compete with Chad for that backup spot.” via Mike Klis of KUSA Denver.
The Broncos depth chart is Case Keenum entrenched as the QB1 with now Paxton and Chad fighting it out for clipboard duties on game day. And there is a not insignificant group of individuals who think Chad has more upside.
So Elway is keeping the party line detailing how the club is not “kicking him to the curb” and that he “could still develop” but in reality, Paxton is little better than a camp arm who can’t seem to grasp the pro game while taking snaps from under center.
Paxton is still on his rookie contract. But Elway has one year to decide if he is going to pick up the 5th year option on the former first-round selection.
If I am in #BroncosCountry I am pretty darn happy the organization has Chad Kelly on the roster because right now if Keenum goes down Paxton is NOT the guy that breeds confidence he can get my club a few wins in relief.
The door isn’t shut on Paxton, he still has an incredibly high ceiling and he will get this camp/preseason and possibly one more. From what I’ve seen so far, he’s going to need them both.
