Grading the Broncos after 5 Weeks

Ronald Leary Broncos

Well 5 weeks of football gone, and so far the Broncos are 2-3. This is not where the players or the fans want them to be. They still have much room for improvement. After a 3 game losing streak, the team is back home again to face the best team in the NFL in the LA Rams. Enough about the future, its time to take a look at the first five games and grade the team on their performance so far.

Offensive Grade: C-

I’m trying to be realistic here. There has been some significant improvement on offense from the year previously. The team has put points on the board 3 out of the 5 weeks. They have run the ball effectively and the passing game has definitely been better. Many fans feel Case Keenum isn’t the guy and feel Chad “Swag” Kelly should be under center. I completely disagree. Keenum, while although not always being up to the standards of say Drew Brees or Tom Brady; he has been much better than any Denver quarterback last season. His passion and determination are infectious and I think the man is just getting warmed up. The fact that the receivers are getting better shows promise. If the offensive line could hold up better it would make all the difference.

Defensive Grade: D

It pains me to say this, but with all the talent on this roster, there is something wrong with the defense. It could be the coaching very easily. Between Von Miller, Derek Wolfe, Bradley Chubb, Shane Ray, Chris Harris, and Darian Stewart; this team should be doing much better. The club started off strong against Seattle and Von Miller looked like a powerhouse and a one-man wrecking crew. In the Monday night game, Miller was almost nonexistent. Week after week this team is getting wrecked and torched by the deep ball and by tight ends. Things need to change. Period.

Overall Grade: D+

This team has had some bright spots on it, almost exclusively the rookies. With rookies lighting it up on offense, it is incredible to see the impact they have made for this team. I think we have only seen the beginning of this offense. There is so much football left and I think with some tweaks they could be a red-hot offensive power. The defense has the stars and the potential, but something isn’t working. It could be the coaching that is what’s wrong. Whatever the case may be, they are not performing up to the high standards of this franchise or of the standards of the fans. However, as I said, there’s lots of time left to turn this ship around and make something out of this season. I still foresee the team being around 8-8. It’s most likely a building year (as my grandmother said to me in an email the other day). Regardless there is much to be optimistic about this team and look forward to.

Until next time, Keep Calm and Bronco On!

My passion is the NFL. Particularly the Denver Broncos. I was born into a Broncos family and have followed them since I was 3 years old when I met John Elway. I have made football and the Broncos a large part of my life. I love everything about the game.
