Injuries are a part of the NFL. Here is the skinny on injuries of note around the league as we quickly approach Week 2 of the NFL Preseason.
Seattle Seahawks’ Rashaad Penny Finger Injury – Adam Maya, NFL.com
The ‘Hawks haven’t been able to catch a break at running back since Marshawn Lynch decided to leave. Doesn’t look like the curse at the position is leaving anytime soon.
“Seattle Seahawks first-round draft pick Rashaad Penny will undergo surgery Wednesday morning to repair a broken bone in his finger, a source informed of the situation told NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport.
The surgery is expected to sideline the rookie running back three to four weeks, Rapoport reported. There’s a chance Penny won’t return before Week 1 of the regular season.”
Ben Roethlisberger in Concussion Protocol – Herbie Teope, NFL Network
The Pittsburgh Steelers Big Ben gets hurt every year. It’s his MO. It’s a direct result of how he plays, of how he lives his life. But damn, usually he waits until the regular season. Ok, there was that motorcycle thing, but other than that. Regardless, that’s not the case this season.
“Ben Roethlisberger sustained a hit today in practice,” Tomlin said. “He is being evaluated by team doctors as part of the concussion protocol.”
Offensive tackle Marcus Gilbert told reporters after practice that Roethlisberger went down after he rolled out and ran into him as Gilbert was blocking linebacker Keion Adams.
WR DeVante Parker Brakes Finger – Kevin Patra, NFL Network
The Miami Dolphins busted his middle finger and former first-round pick continues to have a bad camp for a team that is really needing one of their WR’s to step up.
“The wideout is week-to-week and hopes to be ready for the season opener, per Rapoport.”
“After the Dolphins traded Jarvis Landry earlier in the year, the hope was Parker could leap into a go-to role. The 6-foot-3 receiver, however, has reportedly struggled throughout training camp. Parker did not corral a pass in his 10 snaps in Miami’s preseason opener.”
Saquon Barkley Hamstring – Marc Sessler, NFL Network
The NFC East is getting a lot of bad news at the RB position lately. First, the Redskins lost Darius Guice for the season and now the New York Giants just finished a practice with their prized rookie RB observing some position drills before hooking up with the training staff for the rest of the day. Not good news.
“Barkley, the second overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft, suffered a mild strain of his left leg after catching a pass during Monday’s practice.
Coach Pat Shurmur promised to be “smart with him” as the week progressed, setting the table for Tuesday’s sit-out.
Shurmur specified following Tuesday’s session that Barkley is day-to-day with a “tweaked” left hamstring.”
Teams currently have 90 players on their rosters, so no injury should impact what a club needs to do on the field this week. Unless, of course, it does.
Going to be a great Week 2.
