Yes. Peyton Manning is a first ballot Hall of Fame QB. Cam Newton will get better and be almost impossible to stop one day. And oh yea, by the way, defense wins championships.
It was going to take a perfect game from these men and their coach in order to stop the league MVP. Mission accomplished. And what a mission it was. The league has been slanting the game towards QB’s and the passing game for years. It sells. In the face of this advantage the Denver defense played lights out football. Slugging it out in an uphill environment with a passion and perseverance so dominant the Broncos almost didn’t need their offense.
If you are an offensive purist you probably found the game painful to watch. If however, like me you have old school football roots the game was mesmerizing. In recent years unbalanced teams with dominant offenses have been doing well in the playoffs. The regular season has always been the arena for high octane offenses to shine, but the unbalanced team would always falter in the playoffs when defense makes the difference. Recently however the rules have become so DB hostile and QB friendly that teams with prolific offenses have been getting their shot at the golden ring. It’s made for high scoring yet (in my opinion) a lesser product.
Wade Phillips and his men got tired of the tilt and brought the game back to it’s glory years. They played football. Not seven on air or flag football. Cam Newton was hit, harried, chased, blindsided, hacked and hammered the entire game. It was epic.
Have to give a shoutout to former Dallas Cowboys all-world rushologist DeMarcus Ware. From the moment he arrived he worked tirelessly with the youngsters around him. To their credit Von Miller and the rest of the guys soaked up every piece of savvy Ware dolled out and it showed. If you’re a long time Dallas Cowboys fan you felt pride and joy for DeMarcus Ware. Well done lad, well done.
Peyton Manning can now go out in a blaze of glory matching his brothers two Super Bowl rings. But he knows and the world knows it was the Orange Crush Defense that won the day and proved once again the old adage, “Defense wins championships.”
