Everyone has heard it said and of course, it’s true. The NFL is a business. Three veteran Los Angeles Rams players were reminded of that today according to NFL.com as DE Chris Long, TE Jared Cook and LB James Laurinaitis were all given their walking papers.
These are a talented trio. For various reasons however they all fall under a common category. Under performing while getting overpaid.
With Chris Long it’s been injuries. The beleaguered defensive end would love to still be a Ram and offered to redo his contract to that end. To be frank LA is too talented along the front to afford keeping him around. Miss ya big guy. You always gave it your all. You get the injuries under control another team is getting a playa.
James Laurinaitis never missed a game and leaves leading the team in total tackles. He got older and lost a step. Another big effort guy that will be missed. Got nothing but good thing to say about the man.
Jared Cook was also let go and he also is a talented individual. Unlike so many TE’s however he was not a QB’s best friend. He was Jared Cook’s best friend and if I’m a teammate I’ve hardly noticed hes gone other than to perhaps enjoy the day a bit more. Highly talented. Not a team player. Does not have enough personal discipline to harness his talent at the NFL level. The Rams have to be glad he’s gone.
All three will find work elsewhere in the NFL, albeit at a much reduced rate and the Rams have now created quite a bit of cap space for LA (approx $24 million).
There have to be some changes for them to get to the next level. Fisher isn’t afraid to make them.
