Today at 4 PM EST NFL Free Agency – Day 1 began. Players hit free agency for various reasons. Players believe they are worth more than the team. The team wants the reality of an open market to teach a player his actual value. Injury. Risk. Behavior. Performance. It all comes into play. It did today.
More than one general manager was busy today as top players quickly signed with either their new team or felt the love with their old one. A few made the eyebrows raise.
You can get the current list of who is left here, but what about the #facepalm moves that gave GM’s fits and fans reason to celebrate or develop a drinking problem? Let’s take a look (thank you NFL.com).
QB Brock Osweiler to the Houston Texans – Say WHAT?!?! What was a distant possibility became a distinct probability as Osweiler reportedly wasn’t feeling the love in Denver. This is huge for the Texans and throws a whole bunch of question marks up Denver way.
Is Colin Kaepernick on John Elway’s radar now?
RB Doug Martin signed by Tampa Bay for five years, $34.75 million – Holy DeMarco Murray batman. Another huge RB signing by a team with a ton of cap space after a career year. Gotta love the attitude. This is a much better situation that DeMarco however (more on that below) as Martin is staying with the same team. Aggressive move by the Bucs.
RB DeMarco Murray traded to Tennessee Titans – Though not technically a free agency move it was done to free up cap space as well as divest a team of an expensive part they finally realized doesn’t fit their team. Murray took a pay cut and is already in Nashville at the new facility. The two teams will swap fourth round picks in this years draft. Solid move by all parties involved.
RB Lamar Miller to
Miami Houston for $26 million over four years – The RB position is devalued, right? Another talented back who decided to cash in. Houston needed a replacement for Foster. They got one.
DL Oliver Vernon to Giants for $85 million over five years – Wow comes to mind. The GMen weren’t done. They signed Janoris Jenkins and Damon Harrison for hefty contracts. All in all they totaled $105.5 million in player guarantees. “Win Now Mode” is in full effect in New York as Eli Manning isn’t on the upside of his career anymore.
Free agency is where players with a modicum of talent get over paid. Round one is in the books. Round two starts tomorrow as teams with plenty of cap space have huge advantages in the early going. Round three is where the rest of the league comes into play.
Check back for more updates.
