Poor QB play doomed the Rams in 2015. That’s a fact. When you tell last years starting QB to stay at home instead of come to practice that speaks volumes.
The team addressed the QB situation in a big way in the draft and this raises a ton of questions about the all-important position as the team heads into camp.
With less than six weeks to go before training camp all eyes are on rookie QB and number one draft choice of the 2016 Draft Jared Goff. The young man struggled a bit in OTA’s. To be quite frank, that’s to be expected. I would look for more of it in training camp and preseason as well. He’s a rookie QB in today’s NFL. He’s not Dan Marino, Jeff Fisher isn’t Don Shula and Goff won’t be lighting up defenses for 500 yards a game. If all things go according to plan, he probably won’t even start and that’s a good thing.
By all accounts veteran Case Keenum who’s bounced back and forth between the Rams and the Texans will be the man. Keenum has the mental acumen to be a “game manager” as well as the arm strength to take shots downfield off play action and THAT is just what the doctor ordered. However for the Rams to get it in gear and play to the level of their talent the QB and the entire team will be relying on the production of one man. Sophomore RB Todd Gurley.
13 games, 1,106 yards, 10 TD’s, 4.8 yards per carry average with 11 carries of 20 yards or more. The longest being a 71 yard work of art versus the 49ers in week eight. Worrying about the QB position is valid but as Todd Gurley goes, so go the Rams.
Jeff Fisher prefers a physical, run first team. The line is best at run blocking. The WR corps is filled with downfield, big play athletes. Play action is the key to the offense. The defense plays fast and aggressive. The D can excel with the limited snaps a strong run game brings to the party. It all keys off Gurley.
In 2016 the Rams need the QB to “not hurt them” as the team will use the running game as the primary attack. In 2017 the club will look for Goff to bring superior QB play into the mix complimenting the running attack but the focus will remain the same. For the foreseeable future the Los Angeles Rams are a running team and Todd Gurley is “the man.”
In a passing league that’s refreshing and effective.
