It’s a Tuesday during the NFL season, and you know what that means for the Dallas Cowboys and their fans, we get to listen to Owner/General Manager Jerry Jones talk about his team with 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. You never know what will come out of Jerry’s mouth when he gets behind a microphone and we capture some of the fun for you.
Here are the highlights from Tuesday’s with Jerry after a blowout win against Jacksonville:
On the Cowboys’ offensive performance: “Excited, reminded of how close and coordinated you have you be for these kinds of results (a blowout win). Jones called it “confidence” and the team is “motivated to keep the arrow pointed upward.”
Jerry speak: I’m speaking off the record about aspects of my personal life, I’m trying to coordinate how I can keep my arrow from pointing up.
Reality: The beatdown of the Jaguars could help this team move forward this season, not stuck in mediocrity. We’ll find out soon.
On how the Cowboys were able to be so successful on offense: “No revelation, it’s a hard-working, talented group of players. We got our balance going, powerful running by Zeke and our practice repetition and we got it going.
Jerry speak: We can play well when I publicly chastise my coach after not being more aggressive the week before.
Reality: The Cowboys had a better week of practice after hearing all the negativity from outside the organization and they executed better.
On Conor McGregor being at the game: There’s something to the “magic and personality of the Irishmen, it’s real and he’s got it.”
Jerry speak: We needed a fighter to get some fight back into our guys, so I brought in an Irishman to inspire us to win. Plus, he likes to drink and so do I!
Reality: There was fun to be had with McGregor being at the game, the million dollar strut and all, but it had nothing to do with the Cowboys winning the game.
On Sean Lee, Tavon Austin, DeMarcus Lawrence, and Randy Gregory’s availability this week: “With our bye (coming up), we could have three weeks of lead time (for Lee to get healthy).” Jones does acknowledge it’s a huge game at Washington so he won’t rule Lee out but we’ll see as the week goes on. Austin is likely out, Tank and Gregory will play against the Redskins.
Jerry speak: We’d like to give Lee extra weeks to rest, but the game might be too big to sit him if he’s healthy enough to play.
Reality: Jones is right on the money here.
On Tony Romo’s analysis: “You saw what I got to hear every day of Tony’s career here. Tony could see and react to it faster than he could communicate it to the team, great having him there (on the broadcast).”
Jerry speak: I heard this man babbling about football nonsense for years and I never knew what it meant. I just wanted him to throw the ball to our guys and win games.
Reality: We all knew that Romo was that good, but he needed help. Jerry just confirmed it.
On Brett Maher so far this season: “Give him his due…he’s taken the challenge and he’s played to his opportunity. We’re pleased with how it’s going.”
Jerry speak: I’m not going to say I told ya so, but, I told ya so!
Reality: Maher has done very well and the Cowboys appeared to have made the right move in keeping him over Dan Bailey.
On rumors of a Jason Garrett extension: “I don’t know where Jeff (Sullivan, write who started the rumor) is getting his info, maybe he’s pulling it out of the internet…I’ve never spoken to another soul about it, least of all Jeff.”
Jerry speak: I never said I would give Garrett an extension, but how in the world did Jeff see into the future?
Reality: Jones didn’t quite offer a full rejection of the idea, but he was clear that he hasn’t decided to do that yet.
On Paul Allen’s passing: “Sad, unexpected and before he became an owner, I was in awe of his accomplishments. One of the great names that have helped us advance (technology). What a life story, ashamed it came to an end too soon.”
Jerry speak: No jokes here, Jones clearly admired Allen as an owner and a person. Well said.
