Is it Time for LA Rams DL to Get a Nickname?

In the NFL, there is a  tradition that when a unit of players is good enough you get a nickname. This can represent an entire team, scheme, corps or group of players. With the recent signing by the LA Rams of All-Pro DT Ndamukong Suh to pair with All-World DT Aaron Donald, burgeoning star Michael Brockers and oft-injured talent Dominique Easley it makes one wonder if it is time to start dusting off the nickname skills for these guys in 2018.

When you consider the Rams DL you come away very impressed. However, in order to get awarded a nickname, you will ultimately be compared with some pretty august company. To wit:

Gang Green

90’s Philadelphia Eagles
Randy White, Jerome Brown, Clyde Simmons and Mike Golic

Purple People Eaters

60’s, 70’s Minnesota Vikings
Alan Page, Carl Eller, Jim Marshall, Gary Larsen

Steel Curtain

70’s Pittsburgh Steelers
“Mean” Joe Green, L.C. Greenwood, Ernie Holmes, Dwight White

DoomsDay Defense

60’s, 70’s Dallas Cowboys
Bob “Mr. Cowboy” Lilly, Jethro Pugh, Goerge Andrie

DoomsDay II Defense

70’s, 80’s Dallas Cowboys
“Beautiful” Harvey Martin, Larry Cole, Randy “Manster” White, Ed “Too Tall” Jones
*** award for most individual nicknames on a line
**** The “Beautiful” Harvey Martin radio show was awesome

Fearsome Foursome

60’s Los Angeles Rams
Rosey Grier, Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen and Deacon Jones
*** nickname 1st used by Chargers then Lions

At this point, Suh and Donald haven’t even been on the same practice field together. However, when that happens it will instantly make Aarond Donald a more effective player, which is scary. It also gives Suh the best matchups he has faced in years with Donald at his side. Conversely, Brockers, Easley, Westbrook or even the ball boy will get incredible opportunities as teams are forced to deal with both DT’s. Throw in the occasional blitz from Mark Barron and company and this unit as all the earmarks of needing a nickname sooner rather than later.

The Cowboys may have set the standard via “Doomsday II.” Could “Fearsome Foursome II” be on the near horizon? I can’t wait to find out!
