The Los Angeles Rams travel to New Orleans to take on the Saints, Thursday 8:00 pm for the last preseason game. The Rams have announced they will be resting all of their starters to get ready for the season opener. With the Rams already having most of their starters in place, the depth chart still needs to be figured out. For players that are fighting for spots on the team, this week will be the last time those players will be able to show what they can bring to the organization.
One player that won’t have to worry about making the team is rookie RB John Kelly. Kelly is the Rams 6th round pick out of Tennessee in the 2018 draft. The rookie RB has shown all preseason that other teams missed out on a great player. Kelly already has 3 touchdowns on the preseason and with more most likely to come Thursday, the rookie has secured his spot as the prime backup to star RB Todd Gurley. The Rams recently signed Larry Rose and have Malcolm Brown rounding out the RB depth chart.
OB Luis Perez will play the second half of this week’s game against the Saints. The undrafted rookie has been a lot of fun to watch this preseason. My bold prediction is that Perez makes the team with Brandon Allen backing up Goff. Sean Mannion hasn’t played well this preseason and that has to make the Rams coaching staff feel worrisome. Perez will have every opportunity to prove he deserves a spot on the roster. Will the former bowler complete his dream and become a QB in the NFL? We sure hope so.
LB Bryce Hager will have a nice impact on the LB group this season. The LB corps was one of the worst in the league last season. If the Rams want to become Super Bowl champs, they must get better at stopping the run. Cornerback position will be one of the best in the league with all the new additions the Rams made this offseason. If they get those two groups on the same page we could see one of the best defenses in league history.
“… we could see one of the best defenses in league history.” – TJ Bain
Best defense in league history, yes, that’s right. But none of that will be possible without All-Pro DT Aaron Donald. Donald has yet to sign his contract extension but many reports have said they will get the deal done by the start of the season. That’s a scary defense already and with the addition of Donald, that is just a nightmare for the opposing QB’s.
