This needed to get done. It did get done. Well done.
Perhaps it took too long. Perhaps it took just long enough. Regardless, the Los Angeles Rams and DT Aaron Donald agreed to a 6-year contract extension today to the tune of $135 million including $87 million in guarantees according to NFL Network.
The team had excellent leverage in regards to the Franchise Tag yet, in the end, they ended up doing the right thing and paying the man his due. This breeds respect around the league in regards to the franchise. The fanbase certainly has to be energized after watching the front office lock up the clubs core talents for the next several years. Plaudits for the front office are warranted.
For Donald, you have to give a silent nod and a wry smile to a man who carries himself with aplomb both on and off the field. He knew his worth and held his ground, as he has done for the last few seasons. Yet on game-day, both the fans and the team knew that Aaron Donald would step onto the field and dominate as the best defensive player in the game is supposed to.
Both sides kept it close to the vest in a protracted negotiation. End of the day Donald gets to join the club a week earlier than he is used to and that bodes ill for opposing teams offenses.
Suh and Donald in the middle week 1. Let the nightmares begin.
