The LA Rams defeated the Oakland Raiders 33-13. The Rams really exploded in the 2nd half of the game on both sides of the ball. A homecoming debut for Oakland’s Head coach Jon Gruden was ruined by a dominating defense from the Rams. Outscoring the Raiders 23-0 in the 2nd, the Rams showed teams around the league they are awake now and hungry for a title.
The Black Hole was roaring with Head coach Jon Gruden aka “Chucky” on the sidelines. Gruden’s first game back to coaching after 10 years the Raiders team was ready to go to start the game. On the first drive the Raiders Beast Mode’ed their way into the end zone with a tough goalline run from Marshawn Lynch. The Rams answered back with a nice 19-yard pass from Jared Goff to Todd Gurley to even the score 7-7.
The Rams offense was really sluggish in the 1st half having not played any of their starters all preseason. The unit was held to under a 100 yards against the Raiders and going 0-3 on 3rd down conversions. Kicker Greg Zuerlein missed a field goal early in the 1st half but recovered going 4 of 5 to finish the game. With the Raiders having the time of possession majority at the start of the game, the Rams couldn’t get their flow going. That was a completely different story for the 2nd half.
The Rams came out of halftime fired up scoring 10 points in the 3rd quarter to take the lead 20-13. QB Jared Goff zipped it to Cooper Kupp for an 8-yard touchdown. Goff had all day behind the Rams O-line, going 18-33, 233 yards, 2 TD’s to end the game. Brandin Cooks was one of Goff’s favorite receivers tonight having 5 catches and 87 yards in his 1st game with the Rams. Quite different than the 1st half, Jared Goff rallied the Rams offense back with 267 total yards and 4-8 on 3rd-down conversions.
Todd Gurley went off against Oakland, particularly in the 4th quarter. Gurley had 89 out of his 108 yards all come in the 2nd half. The Rams offense really started to feed Gurley as the game progressed, wearing that Raiders defense down. When you get paid you have to deliver and Todd Gurley did just that tonight going over 100 yards rushing. The Rams got Gurley involved into the passing game having 3 catches 39 yards and 1 TD to end the game. Gurley is a prime MVP candidate this season.
The Rams defense was dominating for the whole game. Shutting out the Raiders in the 2nd half causing 3 INTs from QB Derek Carr. CB Marcus Peters had a beautiful pick 6 to start the season with his new team. A weakness last season for the Rams defense was the LB position, tonight this was much improved with Cory Littleton having 13 total tackles. Aaron Donald, Suh, and Micahel Brockers put pressure on QB Carr all night. This is a super bowl defense and will take over a lot more games this season.
