49ers Getting an Edge on the Competition

Most fans were upset when the 49ers beat the Seahawks in what “they” liked to call a meanless game. One, that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The 49ers needed that win just to get the monkey off their back. Ten straight losses to the Seahawks can give a team a complex. And two, the 49ers are still in a prime spot for the draft so maybe calm down just a bit. The 49ers are set up to gain an edge on the competition and I mean that quite literally due to the fact they hold the second pick in the draft. They will have the opportunity to draft either Ohio State’s Nick Bosa or Kentucky’s Josh Allen.

Our own draft expert Conner Livesay had this to say:

“Allen has more athleticism but also pairs it with great technique. Whereas I think Bosa has the better technique but doesn’t quite reach Allen’s athleticism. In the NFL, most OT’s are technically sound but can struggle with the freak athletes that also play with good technique”

Personally, I have not made up my mind on who I would prefer just yet I need to watch a little more film to decide. But the fact the 49ers are in the prime spot to fill probably their biggest void on defense gives me hope for a much-improved team going into next season. The lack of pass rush led to a league record for fewest takeaways in a single season with only seven. Not the type of record you want to hold. In fact, the 2018 49ers are the only NFL team to not have double-digit takeaways.

The Cardinals have the first pick in the draft but are not in need of an edge rusher. They could possibly trade back and gain more picks as they have many holes to fill. But who would be a great trade partner? Unfortunately, there isn’t a clearcut quarterback worthy enough to be taken with the overall number one pick. Maybe the Jets wanting their pick at the edge rusher of their choosing, they currently hold the third spot.

The Raiders have plenty of room to make moves holding three first round picks this season and two next season. Their first pick is fourth overall, they will need to find a Khalil Mack replacement. I don’t think they would offer one of their first but maybe a second would entice the Cardinals to move back four spots.

Another possibility is they stay where they are and draft Alabama’s defensive tackle, Quinnen Williams. They could shock the world and take another Alabama alumni and draft, Jonah Williams. The latter is far less likely but we saw what the Colts did with an upgraded offensive line this season. Jonah Williams could be a potential top-10 pick so a trade back and then draft Williams is likely. If Josh Rosen is the future, I know some have skepticism, including yours truly, they need to upgrade the line to keep Rosen protected and open up holes for David Johnson.

Should Arizona keep the number one overall pick and not draft an edge rusher than the 49ers will have their choice at either Allen or Bosa. Again they are in the prime spot to gain an edge on the competition.

If it ain’t football news, is it worth reading?
