Is Next Number One NFL Draft Pick A DL Again?
It’s usually a quarterback. QB’s have been dominating the top pick of the NFL Draft for years now and with more than half of the leagues teams currently hunting for their very own elite signal caller it’s no wonder. It’s a passing league and teams need a field general to win games and sell tickets.
For number one draft picks it’s not even close in regards to the rest of the positions and regardless it’s all about the leader of the offense as the first pick of the first round is either a QB itself or someone to protect or sack him. Since 2000 there have been 18 number one draft picks. 12 QB’s, 2 offensive tackles and four defensive lineman all taken with the coveted selection.
DL actually kicked it off in 2K with DE Courtney Brown going number one over all to the Browns book-ended by last years selection of DE Myles Garrett, again by Cleveland. However in 2018 rather than another (boring) QB pick with the first pick of the day it’s looking like LSU LB/DE Arden Key is now leading many pundits draft boards at this point and could result in a DE end pick in back to back years.
Arden goes 6’6″ 238 lbs and had 56 tackles in 2016, 14.5 for loss of which 12 were sacks. These numbers tend to catch scouts eyes. Long and quick Key is built to rush from the edge in the NFL. Physical enough to set the edge his frame should easily accommodate more weight as he matures. He has football instincts being more than a SPARQ flirt and a handful of moves with which to frustrate blockers. Explosion, bend and a non-stop motor will have Arden on every teams radar in need of an edge rusher.
It’s still a long way off before the 2018 NFL Draft gets underway. Look for Arden Key to be in the green room on day one with expectations very high. After all, in the NFL it’s all about the QB … one way or another.
