Iran begins enriching uranium to 60%

2 min read

The announcement of the percentage increase comes two days after an accident at an Iranian nuclear plant , for which Tehran holds Israel responsible. The nuclear pact signed in 2015 between Iran, the United States and the European Union stipulated a maximum of 3.6% enrichment of uranium. Iran’s supreme guide, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the main leader of the Tehran regime.

Iran will begin to enrich uranium to 60% , far from the 20% it had reached so far, and close to the 80-90% needed to create an atomic bomb . This was announced by the Iranian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Abbas Araqchi , this Tuesday in Vienna , just before meeting with representatives of the EU, who mediate between Iran and the US to revive the 2015 nuclear pact .

The agreement stipulated that the Persian state could only enrich uranium up to a maximum of 3.6% . Iran respected that number, but began to increase it after the previous US president, Donald Trump , decided to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement in 2018 .

“I believe that this round of negotiations is the time for the US to present a list of sanctions that it intends to lift. I hope I can go back to Tehran with this list. If not, I don’t think we can continue like this. This is a waste of time, ”said Araqchi. Tehran demands that Washington remove the sanctions . The US, for its part, calls on the Iranian regime to stop the uranium enrichment process completely. Nobody gives his arm to twist.

More tension
The announcement of reaching 60% comes just two days after an accident at Iran’s Natanz nuclear plant , the largest in the country. Iran blames Israel for the event, which they classify as attack, sabotage and nuclear terrorism .

The Tel Aviv government , for its part, neither confirms nor denies that it is behind the action, although the Jewish state has a long history of alleged attacks and clandestine operations on Iranian soil. The last was in October 2020 , when the father of the Iranian nuclear program, Mohsen Fajrizadeh , was shot to death while in his car .

“We will develop our nuclear capabilities as much as our country needs. The enrichment will not be limited to 20% ”, the supreme leader of the country, Ali Khamenei , had already warned in February .
