Benardrick McKinney

McKinney Gets Paid

Benardrick thought he was going to get a fifty million dollar contract and just sneak past me huh?

No, no, no. Let’s discuss.

It’s official, the Houston Texans have a new contract for linebacker Benardrick McKinney in the form of five years and 50 million with 21 of that guaranteed. Definitely not a contract to ignore for a former second-round pick in 2015. In my opinion, 10 million a year for a player of his caliber is a steal and here is why:

Stats: Listen, I love the “eye test” as much as the next guy, but sometimes it can deceive you. In this case, I could use the eye test or statistics for even more credibility. Last season alone, McKinney led the Texans in tackles (95), ten of those of which were for a loss. Since joining the NFL he’s racked up over 176 solo tackles, 25 TFL’s, and 21 quarterback hits. As I reminder he did all of that in three seasons. It’s safe to say production is not a concern when it comes to number 55. Let me also add he has a rating of 79.7 from pro football focus.

Roster: McKinney is an inside linebacker along with Zach Cunningham.  With outside help from Jadaveon Clowney, no introduction needed there, and Whitney Mercilus, if healthy. By having a dominant run stopper in McKinney it gives Clowney and Mercilus room to roam on the outside, and we all know Clowney rushing the passer is always a good thing.  What the Texans have done by inking McKinney to this new deal is take their linebacking group off of Coach O’Brien’s to do list. He doesn’t need to find any other pieces for that group, nor develop any shortcomings. Houston has zero weak links in this group when all healthy, and the Texans realized Benardrick’s worth, plain and simple.
