The L.A. Rams defeated the Houston Texans, 21-20, in week 3 of the preseason. Rams showed again the potential of their dominating defense. With the Texans rolling out most of their starters on offense, they couldn’t have been ready to face a potential Super Bowl defense. The building blocks are in place for this Rams team to make the push for greatness.
Taking the field for the first time with their new team, Marcus Peters, Sam Shields, and Ndamukong Suh destroyed the Texans starters in the 1st quarter. With a powerful hit from DT Suh, Texans QB Deshaun Watson threw an interception to CB Lamarcus Joyner at the 1-yard line. The Rams defense held Watson to only 15 total yards of offense and one interception.
New addition Sam Shields signed this offseason with the Los Angeles Rams. Shields had a beautiful interception against Houston QB Brandon Weeden in the 1st quarter. Shields route running was particularly better than the WR on that play. Sam Shields has been riddled with concussion injuries his entire career. With having to sit the entire 2017 season, it is great to see him back on the field. Welcome back, Mr. Shields.
John Kelly, the rookie out of the University of TN, dominated again in this week’s performance. John Kelly ran all over the Houston Texans, securing his backup role to star RB Todd Gurley. Kelly had 15 carries and had 64 yards rushing. You add the two touchdowns and that makes a total of 3 on the pre-season. With almost 200 yards and 3 touchdowns after 3 games, the Rams organization has to be pleased with their 6th round pick.
Sam Mannion might be looking for another team here in a couple of days. Mannion has continued to show inconsistent decision making, which does not make for a reliable backup QB. Brandon Allen’s play improved last week against the Texans. But probably not enough, however, to keep GM Les Sneed staying up at night on the phone with other teams.
The Los Angeles Rams host the New Orleans Saints Thursday, 8:30 PM for the last preseason game of the 2018 season. With the regular season right around the corner, current Defensive Player of the Year, Aaron Donald has yet to sign a contract extension. The Rams organization and Donald’s team are working hard to come to an agreement. After showing potential dominating defense this week, no one can be more excited than Donald to sign an extension and get back to the team.
The Rams are hungry and ready to make that tough Super Bowl push. Like Head Coach Sean McVay said after the game “One day at a time till that September 10th date in Oakland”-via Twitter. Every team in the NFL has a chance, a dream, a long road to greatness but a championship team pushes forward.
