You Get What You Pay For – 49ers Cut Former 1st Round Pick

49ers GM John Lynch has a big-time failure on his resume now as the San Franciso 49ers have waived their former first-round pick, Ruben Foster.

In Florida this past Saturday (yesterday as of this writing) Foster was charged with suspicion of domestic-violence battery at the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay hotel via the San Francisco Chronicle.

The team is in Florida to play the Buccaneers today and Foster will not be on the field then or, very likely, ever again for the NFL. Most teams had taken Foster off their draft boards when Lynch and the 49ers pulled the trigger at the bottom of the first round. A reputed top-ten talent there was a reason he had dropped so far down the boards and now Lynch knows why 30 other teams passed on the mercurial talent. He’s damaged goods and when you get a guy like that on your team you have wasted valuable resources on a player that will eventually harm your club. It’s a lesson every GM has to learn if they want to be elite. Lynch got the lesson out of the way his first year on the job.

This is the second time Foster has been charged. The first time was a soap opera of charges, counter-charges, lies, and manipulations the NFL let slide. All the NFL’s disciplinary program is for is marketing. There never has been real “mandatory punishments” or factual investigations. Instead, the NFL puts on a carny sideshow for the public and then hands out arbitrary punishments it believes will assuage the public angst over any particular instance.

At this juncture, the public has Foster dead center in their targets and thus the NFL will handle it as such. Foster’s NFL career is most likely over. Perhaps now he can get the help he so obviously, desperately needs. As a minimum, he surrounds himself with people of poor character and at a maximum, he is a serial domestic abuser. All of that needs to be addressed and now, he and those who have (allegedly) suffered at his hands should now have the free time to do just that.
