The Dallas Cowboys are operating in free agency just as they have during the last handful of off-seasons, so no one should be surprised. While not getting involved with players outside the organization, the Cowboys have begun the process of re-signing their own players and purchasing cheaper options in free agency.
Moves made by the team so far: they have re-signed Jamize Olawale, Cam Fleming, Tavon Austin, and Allen Hurns while adding Christian Covington on a low-cost one-year deal.
True to form, the Cowboys are in the business of adding players to shore up some of the positions of weakness in order to draft the best player available. It’s smart to not pigeon hole themselves into one position when the draft rolls around and to have options when they go on the clock. A few years ago, the Cowboys desperately needed a pass rusher and everyone knew it. The result was the Falcons traded up in front of Dallas and took possible draft target, Tak McKinley. The team settled for Taco Charlton and that doesn’t seem to be a good call, yet.
Which leads us to what the Cowboys have been doing this off-season. They have added guys at wide receiver, swing tackle, tight end (Jason Witten returns!) and defensive tackle. All of those players help at positions of need.
However, the Cowboys still haven’t added anyone at one of the most important spots in need of help, defensive end. DeMarcus Lawrence still hasn’t been re-signed and could drag this franchise tag situation out until it becomes uncomfortable for the team, Randy Gregory is suspended and the aforementioned Charlton is a work in progress. In short, the Cowboys need to add pass rushing help and fast.
The draft can be a place to find help, but if Dallas wants to get better on 2019, they need to bring in some veteran help. They cannot sit back and hope Lawrence signs and is ready to play after shoulder surgery. They cannot hope that Gregory will be available at some point, or that Charlton or Dorance Armstrong can make a jump into a pass rushing threat. They need some edge rushers who have proven they can get to the quarterback.
Justin Houston is expensive, but the team should look into him, even on a short deal. Ezekiel Ansah is still unsigned and Shaq Barrett of the Broncos could help as well. There are veteran options available and the Cowboys need to sign one who can help.
If they don’t act quickly, the Cowboys could be stuck without enough pass rushing help to make the defense better.
