Chicago Bears Select David Montgomery RB Iowa State

Ryan Pace demonstrated his conviction in a player by trading up during the third round to select David Montgomery of Iowa State.

The Chicago Bears are now on the clock. The Bears swapped picks with the Patriots for the rights to David Montgomery, former running back out of Iowa State University. Former Bears players Charles Tillman and Olin Kreutz made the announcement Friday evening from the NFL Draft stage in Nashville, TN.

Jaws dropped and eyes popped, Ryan Pace had done it again. The young general manager showed his best poker face leading up to this year’s draft. He even went as far as to say, ‘There were no pressing needs’ on the roster during the pre-draft media day. Then he swung for the fences, trading up 14 spots to select Montgomery. Pace delivered the ideal fit for Matt Nagy’s offense.

The necessity for a new RB1 was well known after the season. The signing of Mike Davis and the trade of Jordan Howard added fuel to the fire. The national narrative including most mock drafts had Chicago taking a running back with its first pick. The Bears scouting department also met with numerous running backs throughout the process prior to draft weekend. There was no surprise for the need but the trade threw everyone off guard.

Josh Jacobs out of Alabama was the first to go, drafted in the first round by the Raiders. Then, Miles Sanders of Penn State was selected by the Eagles midway through the second round. Finally, former Memphis Tiger Darrell Henderson went at No. 6 in the third round to the Rams. Pace had seen enough. He made the call to the Patriots headquarters to execute the trade. The Bears swapped third-round picks with the Patriots. Chicago also sent this year’s fifth-round pick as well as a 2020 fourth-round selection to New England. The Patriots also sweetened the deal by surrendering its only sixth-round pick on Saturday afternoon.

Montgomery’s career made the decision easy. He was the heart and soul of the Iowa State offense. The former Cyclone is known for having good vision along with a strong knack to elusively navigate between the tackles. He is also a capable receiver out of the backfield, a desired trait for Nagy’s offense. The NFL Network’s Lance Zierlein even compared him to Kareem Hunt in his scouting profile of Montgomery.

Pace added this snippet shared via chicagobears.com,

David Montgomery breaks a ton of tackles. There are guys bouncing off of him left and right.”

Chicago will now deploy Montgomery, Davis, and do-it-all back Tarik Cohen as an extraordinarily versatile backfield ready to defend the NFC North crown. This could be the next cog in the machine to take Chicago’s offense into a new stratosphere. Somewhere Mitchell Trubisky is out there smiling, ready to play with his latest toy.

Until then, stay thirsty and BEAR DOWN! JT out.
