Chicago Bears Are Keeping Leonard Floyd for One More Season

It is being reported the Chicago Bears exercised Leonard Floyd’s fifth-year option (per sources)

The Chicago Bears front office is doubling down on Leonard Floyd through 2020. It is being reported they have picked up his fifth-year option worth $13.2 million. Floyd played admirably well as an all-around outside linebacker alongside Khalil Mack.

In 2018, Floyd played in all 16 games for the first time in his career. He racked up 49 tackles, 4 sacks while collecting his first pick-six against the Bills. He struggled early on after being forced to play the early part of the season with a club protecting his right hand. He had surgery to repair a fracture suffered during the preseason against the Broncos.

Injuries have plagued his short career but his potential continually shines. Remaining healthy while improving throughout the course of this past season was a step in the right direction. This rookie extension will provide the Bears’ brass with one more year to evaluate the former first-round pick.

This becomes a make it or break it year for the 27-year-old outside linebacker. Floyd will have to demonstrate the type of former first-round player that can excel alongside superstar Mack. The two offer the potential to become a lethal tandem terrorizing the NFC North for the foreseeable future. If Floyd underperforms, he will be forced to sign elsewhere with the potential label of a first-round bust.

The implications of this particular deal shed some light on the future of the Bears roster. Halas Hall will soon have a lot of mouths to feed in the very near future. Players of note due a long-term extension include Cody Whitehair, Eddie Jackson, and Mitchell Trubisky. Each player has had a significantly larger impact with a Pro Bowl bid a piece and in Jackson’s case, an All-Pro bid.

The offseason begins this weekend with the Bears rookie camp. Stay tuned for all the action.

Until then, stay thirsty and BEAR DOWN! JT out.
